Salad was Delicious and Fresh!

I had the strawberry goat cheese salad and a small shipyard summer ale. The drink was much bigger than I expected, which I guess is a good thing. The salad was delicious and fresh. My cousin had the lobster roll and practically devoured it. S.G. New Jersey

Great Gathering Place in The Old Port!!
Submitted: June 2014
“I really enjoyed the hospitality at the White Cap Grille. The location is great along with the menu and bar. It reminded me of locations I used to visit in Seattle and I intend to return when I come back down to Portland. Your staff treated us well, especially considering how busy you were this evening. Again, congratulations to you and (Staff) for pulling off a great gathering place in the Old Port”

This place is great, the bartender was very charismatic and knowledgable about the menu. I had some fresh mussels locally sourced and the venue was lively and bright. If you're looking for a relaxing meal and drink at good value, check it out. M.M. South Portland, ME
Amazing Lobster Rolls!
Submitted: May 24, 2014
The lobster rolls arrived on grilled buns and had huge chunks and generous amounts of lobster that did NOT drown in tons of mayo. It was pretty much just lobster with some celery and greens on the side. Having tried so many lobster rolls all over Maine and in New England overall over the years, both my husband and I were very impressed with these rolls - in a word, amazing!
The restaurant also had a nice selection of draft beers. The service was excellent overall. At one point, the owner came out to greet us as well. Generally, this was a great accidental discovery. J.M. L.A., California

A Great Dinner In Portland!
Submitted: May 3, 2014
We just had a dinner at the White Cap Grille. It was a wonderful meal. We had their lobster bisque, a nice garden salad and their steak dinner and their haddock. We shouldn't have had the creme brûlée or the flourless chocolate cake, but what the heck! They were a nice way to finish off this meal. The waitress we had was very friendly and the owner or maitre d came over twice for a chat. We'll go back. J.B. Indiana
Impressed with how friendly the staff was
Submitted: February 24, 2014
We came for a pre-show meal and were immediately impressed with how friendly the staff was. Our cocktails came quickly after recommendations from our server on what might meet our mood for the evening. The beet and blue cheese salad was awesome. French Onion soup was tasty but a little heavy on the pepper that night. Their Creme Brûlée was very satisfying. The owner stopped by to check in on how our experience was which is always a nice touch. Trip Advisor- Windham, ME

We had a delightful meal here (there were seven of us) and there are a few more items on the menu that I want to try. Service was delightful and timed just right--not too fast and not too slow. At the end of the meal, the owner came to the table with bite-sized gourmet whoopie-pies made by his wife. Delicious. The perfect end to our meal.

"Being from Md, I was desparate to find a restaurant that served lobster the way I'm used to eating it, steamed, in a shell and drenched in butter so I was disappointed to find yet another place that offered Lobster Rolls but no whole Lobster. As I am walking away the owner comes out, kindly listens to my dilemma, refers me to Dimillo's which has the lobster I want, gets a map so I don't get lost and then says, "Come in, try the lobster roll, ifyou don't like it, I'll eat it and you pay nothing but you have to at least open your mind to something different", and am I sooo glad I did, it was the freshest lobster I have ever had, it was sweet and jucy and delicious :) My husband had a burger which was also very good, service was excellent, staff was qick, kind and welcoming and Michael (the owner) has made a customer for life! "Lobster Chowder-Outlandishly Amazing"
Submitted: September 30, 2013
My sister and I were visiting the area and went in - loved it! I can't say enough about how great the food and the service were. We started off both with a lobster chowder which was outlandhishly amazing. I'm not normally one for heavy soups, either, but this was a perfect portion for a first course, and was absolutely so good. We had the seafood bouillabaisse and grilled haddock, respectively, and both were fresh and cooked to perfection. We ended with the maple creme brulee .. the absolute best treat possible. I was, too, surprised as the lack of patrons there. It was a Wednesday night and we had called for reservations, but definitely didn't need them. I hope that people really head this way because all of that, plus a bottle of wine and some salads, was only a bit above $100. I know there are a million food options in Portland, but this is definitely one of the greats.

We had some time to pass before our flights departed and spent some time in Portland (highly recommend!). It was lunch time and we happened to park in front of the White Cap Grille restaurant. We noticed they offered outdoor dining and we had two small dogs with us. We asked if we could bring them to join us outside and not only did they welcome them, they brought a bowl of water over for them. Our waitress was very friendly and made great suggestions from the menu. The food was exceptional! I highly recommend this restaurant and will go again when I return to Portland. -- NcLuv2Trvl via TripAdvisor

"....the glory was my wife's bowl of Prince Edward Island Mussels."
Submitted: May 23, 2012
We stopped by ther White Cap Grille for lunch on Mother's Day before a whale watching trip, and found everything just wonderful - food, service, ambiance. Having maxed out on fried food for the vacation, I ordered a beet, walnut, and blue cheese salad on fresh greens. Everything was fresh, the walnuts lightly toasted, the cheese just "blue" enough -- beautifully balanced. But the glory was my wife's bowl of Prince Edward Island Mussels. Now, to say that she loves mussels is like saying Mario Batali loves pasta. Mussels are a transcendent experience for her, and she's often disapointed. But this was perfect (the best of four mussel meals on the vacation), all perfectly fresh in a light white wine, butter, and caper sauce. We ordered a half loaf of garlic bread so she didn't miss a bit of the sauce (and even without the sauce, the bread was delicioius! It was Mother's day, and despite the fact that we have no kids, the server brought her a complementary glass of sangria - not too sweet, as it usually is. I had a delightful glass of Viognier - nice to find that varietal on the menu. Ambiance was lovely, with jazz playing in the background, and the service was superb! Oronde (I'm spelling phonetically) was quick, friendly, courteous, and inventive. When we ran out of space, he brought in the next table for us, and when he saw I was walking with a cane, directed me to an upstairs bathroom so I didn't have to fight the stairs to the regular ones on the lower floor. An altogether satisfying visit, and we'll be back when we're next in Portland. -- KentheEnchanter via TripAdvisor

I've been here a few times and have never been let down! The food, service and drinks are really great. The margaritas and the sangria are both really good. After the Mumford and Sons concert came to town, they encouraged us to go to the Old Port and support local. So we went to a little grocery mart and then walked a little farther to this spot. The concert had major food vendor issues. I ate a pretzel at 2 pm so by 9:30 pm I was staaaaaaarving. He was just about to shut it down, but let us in! We got our food quickly. It was good and yummy! And the people were hustling and working hard. Super nice. We made some friends at a nearby table too! Nice way to relax and finish off the night! -- Jurassika via TripAdvisor

My boyfriend and I had the pleasure of dining at White Cap Grille last Sunday night. The whole experience from start to finish was perfect, and just the type of meal we were looking for on a chilly night in Portland. We sat at the bar and were served by Ryan, a great bartender with a fun personality. We ordered the Lobster Risotto Cakes as an appetizer- delish- crunchy on the outside and creamy risotto on the inside. These are AWESOME! I had the Family Farms Burger and my boyfriend had the Chicken Confit. As much as I enjoyed my burger- the Confit- stole the show. Extremely tender and juicy with mouth watering flavors- and perfectly accompanied by super fresh veggies and mashed potatoes. This is worth the drive for! We ended our meal with the heavenly Maple Cremee Brulee- and I picked a martini off their after-dinner menu. Drinks, Food and a great atmosphere! "Interesting choices, large portions, and great service"
Submitted: December 31, 2011
We stopped here for an early dinner and were seated right away. The beer selection was great - I had a Tuckermans Pale Ale and my companion had The Shipyard Export. What drew us to the White Cap was the variety of options. As a vegetarian I am used to having only one choice at restaurants featuring American food. At the White Cap, however, there were several choices. I settled on the beet and blue cheese salad and then a veggie burger with some amazing toppings. I had arugula, carmelized onions, and truffle mayo, but I think I could probably eat here ten times before exhausting all the delicious topping combinations. Oh, and did I mention that the veggie burger was homemade? Yum. My companion had the roast chicken with mushroom ravioli. Judging by the cleanliness of her plate, I would say she enjoyed it. Actually we both had extra food on our plates, but that was because the serving size was so generous. Since we only spent about $25 each for our food and drink, I would say the value was very good. The atmosphere was pleasant and the service was friendly and accommodating. The only drawback I can think of is the bathroom - it seemed kind of "eh." What we liked most were probably the choices, the large portions, and the responsive staff. We will try this place again the next time we are in town. -- mkmarcoux via TripAdvisor

"...a perfect night."
Submitted: June 15, 2012
Friends and I went to the White Cap Grille last night. There were 5 of us. We sat outside on their patio. It was a perfect night. The waitress was awesome. She was very attentive, and offered great suggestions. I was either going to have the lobster roll or The Peaks Island. The lobster roll was going to be my first choice, but the deal breaker would have been if they were to put it on a hot dog roll. To me, having lobster on a hot dog roll is like buying a 1 carat diamond and putting it on an aluminum ring. Anyhow, I asked the waitress about what kind of roll it came on. She said a hot dog roll. I said that was a deal breaker for me. She then offered that they could put it on another type of bread and offered putting it on ciabatta. Well all I can say, fantastic!! One of the best lobster rolls I've ever had. Everyone seems to want to make their lobster rolls with hot dog rolls. I think if White Cap starts making it with ciabatta, then they'll have something a little different, that tastes SOO much better. We all had drinks. I had a margarita. It was pretty good. A man came out with a tray of little tiny whoopie pies. I believe he was the owner. He said his wife had made these and offered us each one. They were delicious. I'm pretty sure this isn't a regular thing he does, but it was a nice touch. Anyhow, a great experience and we'll definitely think about going back. -- MaineTechieGuy via TripAdvisor

This is a relatively new restaurant among the plethora of eating establishments in this little gem of a foodie city, so I was keeping my expectations low. A friend and I were meeting for lunch and were wandering about the Old Port checking-out menus, and decided to try the White Cap. We have no idea what the name means. It's got mid-scale American food and pub fare, with a pleasant indoor atmosphere, though we opted on this nice weather day to sit on the outdoor balcony overlooking Market St. My friend had a beer and a chicken wrap variety of sandwich and fries. I went for an iced tea and a dressed-up pastrami sandwich with onion rings. We were both pleasantly surprised at the decent-sized portions, quality and tastiness of our respective meals. They will even serve your burger on a gluten-free bun if that is an issue for anyone in your party. Our server was friendly and competent. The prices were good, and overall it was an unexpectedly nice experience. We both said that we'd definitely go back again. -- James F. via TripAdvisor
